NSIT Connectivity Package 13.0 Network Configuration
The Network Configuration screen allows you to create a connection to the University of Chicago network. Your options are listed below. If you have a working connection, you probably want to select "Leave Network Settings Alone."
Dialup Modem Connection (Off-Campus Only)
The University provides a limited number of modems for dial-up service. This service is free (long distance calling rules still apply) and can be automatically configured by the Connectivity Package. This choice is appropriate for computers connecting from off campus that do not connect through an outside Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Dynamic IP Address (On-Campus Only)
You can access the University network through an ethernet connection set for automatic configuration (DHCP). This choice is appropriate for computers connecting in the dorms and libraries. If you have multiple network cards, you will need to select which one the installer should configure.
Static IP Address (On-Campus Only)
Most University offices use static (in contrast to dynamic, above) IP addressing. If you select static IP addressing, you will need to enter your assigned IP address, gateway, subnet mask, and host name. If you don't know this information, contact your local technical support for assistance. If you have multiple network cards, you will need to select which one the installer should configure.
Leave Network Settings Alone
This option is appropriate if you already have a working connection to the Internet. It does not make any changes to your network settings.
Please note that this screen is only available if either you do not have a working network connection or if you have a working connection but told the installer to configure your network anyway. If you have a working connection to the Internet, we recommend you select "Leave Network Settings Alone."
